Guwahati is set to host a significant cultural event that marks a progressive shift in traditional Assamese theatrical performance. The Brihattar Uzanbazar Bhaona Shilpi Samaj, in collaboration with the state directorate of cultural affairs, will present “Daksha Yagya” at Latasil Field on October 30. This ceremonial performance is a “bhaona,” a form of religious theater deeply rooted in Assamese culture, traditionally dominated by male performers. This upcoming production is noteworthy as it will feature an all-female cast, symbolizing a break from historical restrictions that prohibited women from participating.
Kailash Sarma, president of the organizing committee, highlights that over 30 performers from the city will be involved, with musical support from artists from Majuli and Sonitpur districts. Sarma noted the transformation of traditional practices, as earlier cultural norms required male actors to also portray female characters. By redefining roles, this initiative aims to connect contemporary audiences with the rich cultural heritage of Assam.
“Bhaona” is a celebrated form combining acting, music, and instrumental harmony, popular not only in Assam but across India. This artistic tradition was pioneered by the 16th-century scholar Mahapurush Srimanta Sankardev. Originally penned in Brajabali and translated into Assamese, Sankardev’s plays include classics such as “Chinha Jatra,” “Patni Prasad,” and “Rukmini Haran.” Sankardev’s disciple, Sri Madhavdev, consecrated the legacy by simplifying these dramas to make them accessible to the general public, notably through the “Jhumur” style.
By showcasing “Daksha Yagya” with female performers, the organizers are not only emphasizing gender inclusivity but also revitalizing a pivotal element of Assamese identity. This event promises to be an enriching experience that highlights the evolving dynamics of cultural expression in modern times, celebrating diversity while honoring deep-rooted tradition.
