Urgent Appeal: KPC Champions Journalist Pension Scheme in Nagaland for a Secure Future
Kohima, October 26 (MExN): Officials from the Kohima Press Club (KPC) met with Abu Metha, Chairman of the Investment & Development Authority of Nagaland (IDAN) and Advisor to the Chief Minister, to discuss significant issues concerning the media sector in the region. Held at Metha’s office, the meeting prioritized the introduction of a much-needed pension scheme for journalists in Nagaland, which remains the only state in the area that has yet to implement such a program. Metha committed to raising the issue with the state government.
In addition to pension plans, the conversation also touched on the proposed building project for the Kohima Press Club’s new premises in the New Secretariat area. This construction was previously announced by Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio during the conventional Budget Press Conference on February 27. Rio promised a permanent Press Club building would be constructed within a year, marking a crucial step toward providing a dedicated space for journalists to meet, exchange ideas, and conduct daily activities.
After the meeting, Metha expressed his thoughts on social media platform X, praising the productive discussion and emphasizing the pivotal role of the media as the fourth pillar of democracy. He stressed the responsibility of all societal sections to contribute to strengthening the media’s integrity and vibrancy, ensuring a robust democratic foundation.
The KPC’s persistent advocacy, in conjunction with its Dimapur and Mokokchung counterparts, underscores a long-standing need for governmental support for journalists’ welfare in Nagaland. While the press community eagerly awaits tangible actions, the dialogue with Metha reflects a hopeful step toward meaningful advancements in the region’s media landscape, promising enhancements in professional support systems for local journalists.
