Delhi Police Triumph: Unmasking the ‘Class 12 Pass’ Jobless Mastermind Behind Chilling Airline Bomb Threats
In a concerning series of events at Indira Gandhi International Airport, a 25-year-old Delhi resident, Shubham Upadhyay, was arrested for allegedly sending bomb threat emails to multiple airlines, including IndiGo, Air India, and Vistara. Driven by a desire for attention, Upadhyay was inspired by similar news reports on television.
On a single Saturday, 33 flights were threatened, marking part of an alarming trend where over 300 flights have received hoax threats since October 14, mostly via social media. The threats prompted immediate security measures, which were later revealed to be unnecessary as the alerts were found to be false.
Deputy Commissioner of Police Usha Rangnani highlighted that the airport had received suspicious threats on October 26 and 29, but both turned out to be hoaxes. The pattern of false threats included an incident on October 16, which forced a Bengaluru-bound Akasa Air flight to return to Delhi, affecting 180 passengers. Subsequently, a teenager was apprehended for threatening flights, including one bound from Mumbai to New York that was diverted to New Delhi.
Following the recent threats, a thorough investigation utilizing manual intelligence and technical surveillance led authorities to Upadhyay. He admitted to issuing the threats and was identified as an unemployed individual holding a Class 12 education.
Amid these disruptions, the Information and Technology Ministry has called on social media platforms to adhere to diligence obligations and swiftly remove or disable false information, as mandated by IT regulations. These incidents underscore the need for heightened security and responsible communication online as authorities strive to mitigate the impact of such hoaxes on air travel safety.
