Relief as Cyclone Dana Weakens Over Odisha: Gentle Rains Grace Northeast
Cyclone Dana, once a formidable threat to India’s coastal regions, has substantially weakened. Initially considered a cyclonic storm, Dana moved westward across northern coastal Odisha before gradually diminishing in strength. By the afternoon of October 25, 2024, it was downgraded to a deep depression over North Odisha, and by late evening, it further weakened into a depression. Early on October 26, it degraded into a well-marked low-pressure area, signaling its continued weakening.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) announced that the cyclone is expected to become insignificant within 12 hours, marking the end of significant weather activity related to it. No adverse weather conditions are anticipated from this diminished system, and this has been labeled the final update on Cyclone Dana. Nevertheless, the National Weather Forecasting Centre in New Delhi and the Meteorological Centre in Bhubaneswar will continue to issue regular bulletins on any residual effects.
Despite the weakening of Dana, the IMD predicts light to moderate rainfall in certain areas of Meghalaya and Mizoram over the next 24 hours, with possible light showers in the Northeastern states such as Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Nagaland, Manipur, and Tripura. The lack of warnings indicates minimal local impacts.
For Guwahati and surrounding regions, a cloudy sky with light rain is forecasted. Temperatures could peak at around 30°C, with lows near 22°C. Monitoring of the situation continues, yet Cyclone Dana is now fading into meteorological history without causing notable disruptions.
This update offers reassurance to those in the affected areas, emphasizing that while some rain may persist, significant impacts from Cyclone Dana are now unlikely. Residents can thus breathe a sigh of relief, as the threat posed by the cyclone dissipates without significant consequences.
