Urgent Alert: Center Demands Action from Social Media Giants to Stop Terrifying Hoax Bomb Threats
GUWAHATI: On October 26, the Central Government of India issued a crucial advisory, addressing social media platforms and other intermediaries about the urgent need to curb the dissemination of hoax bomb threats affecting airlines in India. Such false alarms, facilitated by the rapid spread of content through sharing features on these platforms, are posing serious risks to public safety, especially for airline passengers.
The Ministry of Electronics & IT (MeitY) has highlighted the gravity of these fictitious threats, noting their potential to not only alarm the public but also disrupt economic stability and jeopardize security. The advisory underscores the legal responsibility of digital intermediaries under the Information Technology (IT) Act and IT Rules, 2021, mandating them to exercise “due diligence” in swiftly blocking or removing deceitful and harmful content.
Moreover, MeitY has reiterated the strict compliance required under the IT Act, 2000, the IT (Intermediary Guidelines and Digital Media Ethics Code) Rules, 2021, and the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), 2023. Non-compliance with these regulations could result in the loss of liability protections provided under Section 79 of the IT Act, thereby rendering the platforms accountable for unlawful content.
This advisory is part of a broader effort to safeguard public order and aviation security by ensuring digital platforms are proactive and responsible in countering misleading and potentially dangerous information.
