Unveiling American Airlines’ Spectacular 3Q 2024 Earnings: Surpassing Expectations & Igniting Investor Excitement!
An American Airlines flight departed from Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport in Arlington, Virginia, on August 28, 2024. Recently, American Airlines reported a loss for the third quarter but lifted its profit forecast for the year, highlighting a positive shift in its sales strategy. CEO Robert Isom indicated that changes made earlier in the year are yielding beneficial results.
The airline expects to earn between 25 and 50 cents per share on an adjusted basis for Q4, exceeding analysts’ expectations of 29 cents per share, as estimated by LSEG. For the entire year, American anticipates earnings could reach up to $1.60 per share on an adjusted basis, surpassing its previous forecast of a maximum of $1.30 per share.
Earlier this year, in May, American Airlines dismissed its chief commercial officer following an unsuccessful sales strategy aimed at boosting direct bookings. The strategy was swiftly revised, with notable efforts to reconnect with the business travel sector. Isom expressed optimism that these efforts and the positive feedback from travel agencies and corporate clients will bolster the company’s revenue performance.
During the third quarter, American Airlines reported record revenue of $13.65 billion, slightly above Wall Street expectations of $13.49 billion, though it incurred a net loss of $149 million. This was a significant improvement from the $545 million loss recorded the previous year. The airline’s unit revenue decreased by 2% in the quarter.
Looking forward, American Airlines predicts a year-over-year drop in unit revenue of 1% to 3% for Q4, with capacity projected to rise by as much as 3%.
