Japanese Encephalitis Claims Five Lives in Assam: Health Concerns Rise with Monsoon Season
Guwahati: The onset of the monsoon season is taking a toll on public health in Assam, with Gauhati Medical College Hospital (GMCH) reporting five fatalities due to Japanese Encephalitis (JE) since April. Hospital data reveals that 22 JE patients have been admitted since April 1, with five deaths and 11 currently receiving treatment. New JE cases are especially prevalent in districts where pig rearing is common.
Dr. Abhijit Sarma, Medical Superintendent of GMCH, urged public caution but reassured that there is no major cause for alarm yet. Rural areas in Assam face significant risks due to the flooding, which creates stagnant water ideal for mosquito breeding, thereby increasing JE infection rates. Upper Assam districts such as Jorhat, Charaideo, and Sivasagar are under close observation, with more than 50% of this year’s JE cases identified in these regions. Preventative measures, including district-directed fogging to combat vector-borne diseases like JE and dengue, are already underway.
In addition to JE, GMCH has admitted 66 Acute Encephalitis Syndrome (AES) patients, resulting in 12 deaths from April 1 to July 16. Currently, 34 AES patients are under treatment. Conversely, the hospital has seen fewer dengue cases with just 12 admissions, one death, and two patients receiving ongoing treatment.
Official records at GMCH show the hospital has admitted 54 JE cases, 183 AES patients, and 170 dengue patients in the 2023-24 period. Health department officials emphasize continued monitoring and precautionary measures to address the rise in vector-borne diseases this monsoon season.
Delhi Hospital Shooting Incident
A tragic incident occurred at GTB Hospital in Delhi, where a 32-year-old man undergoing treatment for an abdominal infection was shot dead inside Ward 24, allegedly due to personal enmity. In response, the Residents’ Doctors Association has initiated a strike over safety concerns.
