Outraged Manipur Doctors Unite in Protest Against Kolkata’s RG Kar Hospital Tragedy
Medical professionals in Manipur staged a sit-in protest to express solidarity with a 12-hour hunger strike held in Kolkata, demanding justice in the RG Kar rape and murder case. This protest was organized by the Indian Medical Association Junior Doctors’ Network (IMAJDN) on October 15, 2024, within a medical college in Manipur. The Resident Doctors Associations of Jawaharlal Nehru Institute of Medical Sciences and Regional Institute of Medical Sciences participated in the protest by gathering outside the OPD block of their institute.
One participating doctor voiced frustration over the failure to deliver justice, despite ongoing protests lasting 90 days. He emphasized that an attack on one doctor equates to a threat against the entire medical community, urging authorities to expedite justice for the victim. Dr. RK Lenin, President of the Indian Medical Association Manipur branch, described the situation as a somber moment for the medical fraternity, especially junior doctors, following the RG Kar incident. He echoed support for West Bengal doctors fasting for justice for Sister Abhaya and seeking improved security measures in hospitals.
Dr. Lenin highlighted the mistreatment and lack of basic security faced by doctors, which has, in some instances, led to doctor suicides. He warned that such issues should not be taken lightly by authorities. Moreover, he pointed to the threats and attacks healthcare providers in Manipur endure when adverse incidents, beyond their control, occur.
Dr. Lenin urged the public and government to curb threats and assaults against healthcare workers, emphasizing self-restraint during unfortunate events. He stated, “Doctors never intentionally harm patients or their families. If someone is found guilty, let the law provide justice.”
