Spirit Airlines announced a larger-than-expected loss for the last quarter due to lower-than-anticipated revenue. The airline expects to report an adjusted loss between $160 million and $173 million for the quarter ending June 30, compared to a previous estimate capped at $145 million. Revenue is projected at $1.28 billion, down from a forecast of at least $1.32 billion.
Non-ticket revenue, including various fees linked with its low fares, fell “several dollars lower than anticipated” per passenger. This update led to a 6% drop in Spirit’s shares during extended trading after the investor update in a securities filing.
Spirit and Frontier Airlines have revised their ticket sales strategies, now offering bundles that include seat assignments and carry-on bags, aligning more with larger competitors. Spirit anticipates improvements in total revenue per passenger as it progresses with these changes.
The company faces multiple challenges, including an oversupplied U.S. domestic market, an engine recall from supplier Pratt & Whitney grounding several aircraft, and the repercussions of a federal judge blocking a planned acquisition by JetBlue Airways earlier this year.
