China Escalates Tensions: Shockwaves Follow Threatened Trade Measures Against Taiwan After Fiery Presidential Denouncement

China’s Taiwan Affairs Office attributed the trade frictions to the Democratic Progressive Party’s “Taiwan independence” stance, asserting that this political stance complicates resolution of trade issues through dialogue.
Previously, in May, China reinstated tariffs on 134 Taiwanese goods after claiming Taiwan did not reciprocate concessions under a trade deal, the Cross-Strait Economic Cooperation Framework Agreement (ECFA), established in 2010. Sources indicated that China might exert pressure on Lai by withdrawing some preferential trading terms from the ECFA.
The situation underscores the fragile trade and political relations across the Taiwan Strait, as Beijing and Taipei navigate complex interactions shadowed by deep-seated sovereignty disputes.
