Heartwarming Initiative: Empowering Assam’s Village Heroes with Essential Gear to Safeguard Pobitora’s Wildlife
In Assam’s Morigaon district, the Members of Village Defence Parties (VDPs), pivotal in the protection of wildlife at Pobitora Wildlife Sanctuary, particularly the one-horned rhinoceros, have received essential field gear to boost their conservation efforts. A recent initiative saw 50 members from 25 VDPs being equipped with torches and raincoats at a program organized at the Mayong police station, according to a press release issued on Saturday.
The program was a collaborative effort by the biodiversity conservation organization Aaranyak and the Morigaon District Police, with support from the David Shepherd Wildlife Foundation (DSWF). This initiative aims to address human-wildlife conflict and counteract poaching activities more effectively, as noted by Additional Superintendent of Police Dhrubajyoti Nath.
During the event, VDP members recounted their experiences with rhino-related conflicts, particularly highlighting a recent incident where a man lost his life to a rhinoceros. Strategies for reducing such conflicts were discussed, focusing on understanding animal behavior and implementing proper precautionary measures.
The District Superintendent of Police, Hemanta Kumar Das, emphasized the importance of this initiative in enhancing wildlife protection and monitoring efforts. Aaranyak’s Secretary General, Bibhab Kumar Talukdar, praised the vigilance of VDP members, noting that their efforts have resulted in an absence of poaching incidents in the Pobitora Wildlife Sanctuary for the last eight years.
The Pobitora Wildlife Sanctuary, spanning 38.85 square kilometers, boasts the highest density of rhinoceros population, offering prime grassland and wetland habitats for these majestic creatures. This equipment initiative reflects a significant step in fortifying grassroots conservation efforts, ensuring these vulnerable, iconic animals remain safeguarded from the twin threats of poaching and human-wildlife conflicts.
