Triumphant Victory: Illegal Stone Quarry Above Majestic Wahniangleng Reservoir Finally Shut Down
Shillong, July 16: The KHADC Forest Department officials on Tuesday shut down an illegal stone quarry above the Wahniangleng reservoir, which is crucial for supplying water to the Mawphlang dam and Greater Shillong homes. The quarry, owned by Blik Nongkynrih, was halted by Executive Member in Charge of Forest, Macdalyne Mawlong, who stated all mining activities have ceased.
Mawlong mentioned that the department’s staff have also documented statements from local residents. She stressed that stringent actions would be taken if mining activities were to resume at the site. "We will issue necessary notices to warn the quarry owner against restarting operations, given the significant threat to the Wahniangleng reservoir," she added.
Back in February, The Shillong Times highlighted the illegal quarry’s presence above the Wahniangleng reservoir. Following this, the Dorbar Shnong of Laitkynsew revealed that the former Sordar of Elaka Laitkroh had initiated the quarry without any approval from KHADC or state authorities. The prompt intervention by both the state government and KHADC led to its closure, halting the previous supply of boulders to Bangladesh.
Recently, Wahniangleng residents reported to The Shillong Times that quarry operations had resumed, noting the loud echoes of dynamite explosions. Villagers are concerned that the quarry, situated in the critical catchment area for Wahniangleng, could result in the river drying up and causing severe downstream water scarcity.
These developments underscore the ongoing tensions between unauthorized commercial activities and environmental preservation efforts in the region. The KHADC’s firm stance against illegal quarrying is a crucial step in safeguarding the water resources vital to communities in Greater Shillong.
