Iran’s Chilling Plot to Assassinate Trump: Secret Service’s Heroic Response Before Intervention
Republican presidential candidate and former U.S. President Donald Trump was assisted by the Secret Service with a bloodied face after multiple shots were fired during a campaign rally at the Butler Farm Show in Butler, Pennsylvania, on July 13, 2024. This incident followed recent U.S. intelligence about an Iranian plot to assassinate Trump, according to three officials familiar with the matter who spoke to NBC News.
The intelligence prompted the U.S. Secret Service to bolster security measures around Trump, the current Republican presidential nominee, officials stated. The information and heightened security were in place before 20-year-old gunman Thomas Crooks attempted the attack during the Pennsylvania rally.
CNN initially reported on the Iranian plot, bringing attention to the Secret Service’s failure to prevent Crooks from shooting at Trump. National Security Council spokeswoman Adrienne Watson remarked that ongoing investigations have not found any connections between Crooks and any accomplices, domestic or foreign.
“As we’ve mentioned repeatedly, we’ve tracked Iranian threats against former Trump administration officials for years, stemming from Iran’s desire for revenge over the killing of Qassem Soleimani. This remains a critical national and homeland security issue,” Watson noted.
The Secret Service, tasked with protecting former presidents and significant presidential candidates, has faced sharp criticism for not preventing the shooting. The agency stated that securing the building from which Crooks fired was the responsibility of local Butler Township police, as it was beyond the rally site’s security perimeter, which was under Secret Service jurisdiction.
This is a developing story and updates are forthcoming.
