Passionate Triumph: Sentiments Guarded as Agencies Defend Lakshmi Bai Statue Installation in Delhi High Court
The Delhi High Court is reviewing a dispute involving the installation of a Lakshmi Bai statue at Shahi Idgah Park in Sadar Bazar. The Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) and the Delhi Development Authority (DDA) assured the court that they considered community sentiments when placing the statue, which stands 200 meters away from the Idgah wall with a partition built to protect these sentiments. The court, addressing concerns raised by the Shahi Idgah Managing Committee—which had sought to prevent the statue’s installation by claiming the park as Waqf property—directed the authorities to escort three representatives from the committee to inspect the statue’s placement. Previously, a single judge dismissed the committee’s petition against the statue, arguing that Lakshmi Bai is a national hero and that maintaining parks does not infringe on religious rights. The case is scheduled for further hearing on October 7.
