Enchanting Victory: Northeast’s Villages Achieve National Glory in Best Tourism Villages 2024
In a significant achievement for Northeastern India, five villages from the region were honored in the Best Tourism Villages Competition 2024, organized by the Ministry of Tourism, Government of India. This announcement coincided with World Tourism Day on September 27.
Among the winners, Tripura, Mizoram, Meghalaya, Assam, and Manipur stood out, each village recognized for its unique contributions to tourism. In the Community-Based Tourism category, Sialsuk village of Mizoram and Alpana Gram of Tripura emerged as winners. The Craft-Based Tourism category saw Sualkuchi of Assam and Umden of Meghalaya being awarded. In the Heritage-Based Tourism category, honors went to Andro of Manipur and Mawphlang of Meghalaya.
The Ministry’s press statement highlighted the competition’s inception in 2023, aiming to spotlight villages that showcase cultural and natural assets through sustainable practices. The first edition saw 795 applications, while the second edition, in 2024, garnered 991 applications from 30 States and Union Territories. Ultimately, 36 villages were recognized across eight categories.
The initiative underscores the government’s commitment to promoting tourism in India’s rural heartlands, celebrating the diverse heritage and sustainable practices of these communities.
