Heartbreaking Ordeal: Financially Struggling Assam Family Harassed by Loan Recovery Agents, Probe Underway
In a distressing turn of events, North East Small Finance Bank, located in Dudhnai, faces serious accusations of harassing the family of Lakheshwar Kalita of Lela Baniapara due to unpaid loan instalments. Reports allege that bank officials, including Harivilas Boro and Disha Roy, visited the Kalita residence both during the day and at night, pressuring the family to clear their overdue payments and worsening their financial situation.
Lakheshwar Kalita had taken a loan of Rs 2 lakh from the bank and despite financial struggles, he and his family had been making regular payments. In an effort to secure better income and keep up with loan repayments, Lakheshwar relocated to Hyderabad for work, leaving his wife and child in Dudhnai.
Unfortunately, due to recent financial hardships, the family missed two loan instalments, leading to the bank’s aggressive recovery actions. Kalita’s wife reported that bank representatives came to their home at night demanding immediate payment, causing her significant distress and fear for her safety.
In response, she sought refuge and protection at the Dudhnai police station with her child. Speaking to local media, she revealed that the intense pressure from the bank officials had driven her to despair, even though she had assured them the overdue payments would soon be settled.
This incident has sparked serious concerns regarding the aggressive debt recovery tactics employed by financial institutions, particularly towards economically vulnerable groups. Local authorities are now expected to investigate the matter thoroughly to ensure justice for the Kalita family.
This alarming case highlights the urgent need for a review of debt recovery practices by banks, especially in dealing with financially struggling families.
