Gautam Adani’s proposal to manage Kenya’s Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) has led to widespread protests, Senate hearings, and legal battles against the Indian billionaire’s group. Although a court has already suspended the unsolicited bid, the government faces backlash over the deal’s transparency. Opponents cite allegations of money laundering involving Adani’s $203 billion empire, which the group denies.
The announcement resulted in airport worker strikes that disrupted operations, followed by a court decision to temporarily block the project. The Kenya Human Rights Commission and Law Society of Kenya argue that the $1.85 billion investment required for the proposal is achievable without Adani’s involvement.
Kenyan Transport Secretary Davis Chirchir, summoned by the Senate, failed to present the proposal’s details, exacerbating public mistrust. Corporacion America Airports SA, another interested party, claimed it received no response from Kenyan authorities.
Despite the airport controversy, Adani Group secured a $1.3 billion contract to build high-voltage power lines in a partnership with the African Development Bank. Terms of the airport deal include an 18% equity stake for Adani, land for hotel and business development, and favorable tax treatment, according to court documents.
Critics argue the deal’s investment terms are inadequate, especially as neighboring countries invest heavily in airport infrastructure. Adani faces scrutiny in other countries for alleged financial misconduct, which the group denies.
In summary, Gautam Adani’s airport proposal has ignited significant debate in Kenya, highlighting issues of transparency and national sovereignty while reflecting broader concerns about the Adani Group’s international dealings.
