Outrage Unleashed: Supreme Court to Investigate Animal-Fat Claims in Beloved Tirupati Laddoo on September 30
Supreme Court to Hear Controversy Over Alleged Use of Animal Fat in Tirupati Laddoo
The Supreme Court is poised to address two petitions on Monday, September 30, concerning the alleged use of animal fat in the ‘prasadam’ distributed by the Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanams (TTD). Filed by BJP leaders Subramanian Swamy and YV Subba Reddy, the petitions demand investigations into claims that substandard ingredients, including animal fat, were used in preparing the revered Tirupati laddus during the previous YS Jagan Mohan Reddy-led YSRCP government.
Earlier this week, Subramanian Swamy announced his Public Interest Litigation (PIL) in a social media post, urging the Supreme Court to monitor a probe into Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu’s unsubstantiated allegations. Naidu had asserted that the sacred prasadam was tainted with animal meat and other rotten items, causing significant concern among devotees.
Meanwhile, YV Subba Reddy, a former Chairman of TTD and current Rajya Sabha member, has also sought a Supreme Court-directed investigation by an independent committee led by a retired Supreme Court judge, as reported by the news agency PTI.
The controversy ignited when Naidu’s assertions about the use of animal fat in Tirupati laddus emerged, accusing the previous Jagan Mohan Reddy administration. In retaliation, Jagan Reddy’s YSR Congress Party condemned Naidu’s claims as politically motivated slander. The Telugu Desam Party (TDP), led by Naidu, circulated lab reports to support their allegations.
On September 20, TTD Executive Officer J Shyamala Rao announced at a press conference that lab tests had detected animal fat and lard in the examined samples. Consequently, the TTD is in the process of blacklisting the contractor responsible for supplying the adulterated ghee.
As the Supreme Court prepares to hear these pleas, the outcome of the investigations could have significant implications for both the religious sanctity of the prasadam and the political landscape in Andhra Pradesh.
