Eight Held for Brutal Assault on BSF in Tripura’s Sepahijala
Eight people have been arrested in connection with the assault on Border Security Force personnel during a clash at Ashabari in Tripura’s Sepahijala district, Chief Minister Manik Saha said on Monday. Saha strongly condemned the violence and said strict legal action would be taken against all those involved.
In a post on X, the chief minister said the attack on BSF personnel was unacceptable and stressed that violence against security forces must be dealt with firmly under the law. “All those involved will be brought to justice, and strict legal action will be taken against them in accordance with the law,” he said, adding: “Violence against our security personnel will not be tolerated.”
Saha assured that everyone involved in the incident would face justice and said authorities had been directed to act swiftly against those responsible. He described the assault as a brutal attack on security personnel who deserved the utmost respect and protection.
The clash left three BSF personnel and several villagers injured, according to reports. It followed allegations that border personnel had assaulted a local youth. Local accounts said the incident began around 10 am near Natun Bazar, close to Ashabari Gram Panchayat, when BSF personnel allegedly detained Hefzur Rahman, son of Shahajan Miah, while he was clearing vegetation.
Villagers alleged that Rahman was physically assaulted during the detention and sustained a fractured leg. The incident triggered protests, with residents blocking the Ashabari-Rahimpur road near Natun Bazar and demanding action against the personnel allegedly involved in the assault.
During the blockade, a four-wheeler belonging to the BSF’s 49th Battalion was travelling from Rahimpur towards Boxanagar when it encountered the protesters. The vehicle was reportedly carrying Company Commander Rohit, driver Sunil Kumar and another BSF personnel, Manjit.
According to reports, protesters armed with sticks and bamboo attacked the vehicle and assaulted its occupants, leaving all three BSF personnel injured.
