Aaranyak Seeks Drone Ban to Protect Amur Falcon Sites in Assam
Conservation organisation Aaranyak has urged authorities to ban drone flights near Amur Falcon congregation sites in Assam, warning that the aircraft could injure or disturb the migratory birds during their seasonal stay.
The appeal follows reports of visitors and social media content creators flying drones close to groups of falcons to take photographs and videos. Aaranyak said the drones’ fast-spinning propellers could physically harm the birds, while their presence could disrupt them at congregation sites.
Udayan Borthakur, Aaranyak’s organising secretary and a wildlife photographer, said the growing use of drones around the birds was concerning. He stressed that wildlife safety should take priority over entertainment and online popularity, and that photographing and documenting migratory birds must be done responsibly.
Aaranyak has asked the Dima Hasao Autonomous Council and the Morigaon district administration to prohibit recreational, commercial and other non-essential drone operations near identified sites. It has also called for clearly marked no-drone buffer zones, monitoring by the Forest Department and local authorities, and awareness campaigns for visitors and photographers.
The organisation has offered to help develop awareness materials and organise programmes for local communities, tourists, photographers and content creators.
Amur Falcons migrate from breeding grounds in eastern Asia to wintering areas in southern Africa. Assam and other parts of Northeast India are important transit areas along their route. Aaranyak said limiting unnecessary human interference at congregation sites is important to the birds’ safe passage.
