Dhubri District Police have arrested 64 people in a wide-ranging crackdown on child marriage, an enforcement drive that stretched across multiple police station jurisdictions in the district and targeted grooms as well as parents and guardians accused of facilitating such unions.
The operation was launched under the Dhubri Sadar Police Station, where 18 people were taken into custody in the initial phase. Police then extended the drive to other areas of the district, including Gauripur, Golakganj, Agamani, Sapatgram, Bilasipara, Chapar and Fakirganj, taking the total number of arrests to 64.
According to police sources, those arrested include grooms allegedly involved in child marriages, along with parents and guardians accused of arranging or enabling the unions. The sweep signals a coordinated effort by the district police to act against all those who play a role in solemnising such marriages, rather than focusing on any single category of accused.
Officials said legal proceedings have been initiated against the arrested individuals under the relevant laws dealing with the prevention of child marriage. Further action in the cases is expected to follow as the investigations progress.
Reiterating their commitment to curbing the practice, Dhubri Police indicated that similar enforcement drives will continue across the district in the coming days.
