BAGHMARA: Meghalaya Chief Minister Capt. Williamson A. Sangma was remembered on his 36th death anniversary in South Garo Hills, with a solemn tribute parade held in his honour at Baghmara on Sunday.
The commemoration took place at the Capt. Williamson Sangma Memorial Park, where personnel of the South Garo Hills District Police carried out a Shok Parade — a ceremonial mourning parade — to pay their respects to the state’s founding leader on the occasion of his death anniversary.
In addition to the police personnel, a number of government officials and police officers attended the ceremony. Speaking on the occasion, the officials recalled Capt. Sangma’s pivotal role in the creation of Meghalaya, urging those present to remember his lifelong contributions to the state’s formation and development.
As a mark of respect, floral tributes were offered at the leader’s memorial during the ceremony, honouring the legacy of the man regarded as the principal architect of Meghalaya’s statehood.
The annual observance in Baghmara underscores the enduring reverence for Capt. Sangma across the Garo Hills region, which he represented throughout a distinguished career in public life, and serves as a reminder of the sacrifices made in the struggle that led to Meghalaya attaining separate statehood.
