Manipur to Host National Inter-University Thang-Ta Championship from Oct 26
The National Sports University (NSU) in Manipur is set to host the All India Inter-University Thang-Ta Championship 2026–27 from October 26 to 28, bringing together around 350 participants from 31 universities across the country for a three-day showcase of one of India’s oldest martial arts.
The championship will be held at the Indoor Stadium of the Khuman Lampak Sports Complex in Imphal, with competitions organised for both men and women across the three days.
NSU Vice-Chancellor Daljit Singh Chaudhary announced the details at a press briefing on October 25, stating that the event is being organised in line with the annual sports calendar of the Association of Indian Universities (AIU) for 2026–27.
Manipur Chief Minister Yumnam Khemchand Singh is scheduled to attend the opening ceremony, which begins at 4 pm on October 26.
Thang-Ta, the traditional martial art of Manipur, derives its name from “thang,” meaning sword, and “ta,” meaning spear. The discipline combines combat techniques with a long-standing tradition of physical discipline and weapons training, and has been practised in the state for generations.
The championship is expected to bring together university athletes from different parts of India, offering a national platform for a martial art that remains closely tied to Manipur’s cultural heritage. Hosting the inter-university meet in Imphal underscores the state’s position as the home of Thang-Ta and highlights efforts to promote the traditional sport among young athletes across the country.
