Silchar Drain Wall Collapses in 24 Hours; Locals Allege Irregularities
Allegations of major irregularities have surfaced in the construction of a drain along Kathal Road in Silchar after the newly built concrete wall of a culvert-cum-drain collapsed within 24 hours of its completion, sparking outrage among local residents.
The structure gave way in the stretch between Bank Colony and Laskar Lane. According to local sources, the concrete work on the wall was completed on October 22, but by the afternoon of October 23, the freshly cast wall had crumbled, raising serious questions about the quality of the work executed.
Residents have alleged that the swift collapse points to the use of substandard construction materials and a lack of proper supervision during the project. However, these allegations have not been independently verified, and no official assessment of the construction quality has yet been made public.
Beyond the collapse itself, locals have voiced concern over the absence of alternative traffic arrangements during the ongoing construction work. With the drain work disrupting the usual route, people in the area are reportedly facing considerable difficulties in commuting. Residents say children and elderly people are being forced to navigate unsafe conditions on a daily basis, adding to the sense of frustration in the neighbourhood.
The incident has prompted locals to demand a proper investigation into the collapse, a thorough assessment of the quality of the construction work, and strict action against those found responsible for any lapses. They have also urged the concerned authorities to arrange a safe alternative route at the earliest so that daily movement in the area is not further jeopardised.
The rapid failure of a structure completed barely a day earlier has intensified scrutiny of how public infrastructure projects in the area are being executed and monitored. Residents argue that the incident reflects deeper lapses in material quality checks and on-site oversight, issues they say must be addressed if similar failures are to be prevented in future works along Kathal Road and elsewhere in Silchar.
As of now, there has been no official response from the authorities concerned regarding the collapse or the demands raised by the residents. Locals say they will continue to press for accountability until the matter is investigated and corrective measures, including a safe passage for commuters, are put in place.
