Congress MP Gaurav Gogoi Demands Removal of CEC Gyanesh Kumar
GUWAHATI: Congress MP Gaurav Gogoi on Friday launched a sharp attack on the Election Commission of India, accusing it of losing its constitutional authority, and demanded the removal of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar, alleging that he was acting in the interests of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah. Separately, the deputy leader of the Congress in the Lok Sabha also accused the Assam government of failing to deliver justice in the death of singer Zubeen Garg, calling the delay the biggest failure of Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma’s tenure.
Addressing the media in Guwahati, Gogoi said the opposition INDIA bloc had planned a mock Parliament on October 28, though details of the event were yet to be finalised. He added that the bloc’s ‘Vote Bachao, Desh Bachao’ rallies were continuing across the country as part of its campaign against what it alleges is manipulation of the electoral process.
“Every day we are receiving reports and news that the Election Commission of India has been totally manipulated, has been hollowed out, has been emptied of its constitutional authority, of its constitutional duty,” Gogoi said.
Reacting to the Prime Minister’s remarks targeting Congress leader Rahul Gandhi, Gogoi said Modi’s repeated references to the Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha betrayed a preoccupation with his political rival. He questioned why the Prime Minister was not instead addressing pressing public concerns, including issues affecting students and the middle class, the situation in Manipur, and the plight of drought-hit regions.
Later, after paying homage at Zubeen Kshetra, Gogoi turned his attention to the Assam government’s handling of the Zubeen Garg case. He alleged that although Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma had repeatedly stated in the Assembly that the beloved singer had been murdered, the Special Investigation Team (SIT) constituted to probe the case had failed to present all the facts and evidence before the court.
Gogoi also pointed to the successive granting of bail to those arrested in connection with the case, questioning the very purpose of the SIT. “There is apprehension among people that the SIT formed by Himanta Biswa Sarma was not constituted to deliver justice to Zubeen Garg, but to protect those connected with Zubeen Garg’s death,” he said.
The Congress MP said the failure to secure justice for Garg would be the biggest stain on Sarma’s political career, alleging that the government had failed both the singer and his supporters, who have been demanding answers since his death.
