Manipur University Shut Down: Campus Protests Erupt Over Bomb Threat
Normal academic and administrative operations at Manipur University ground to a halt on Friday, October 23, 2026, as hundreds of students, teachers, and staff members launched a mass campus protest against a grenade attack targeting one of the institution’s senior faculty members earlier in the week.
The demonstration was triggered by a chilling incident on October 20, when an unidentified miscreant attempted to hurl a live hand grenade at the Singjamei residence of Professor Chinglen Maisnam, a prominent faculty member of the university’s Department of South East Asian Studies. The device failed to detonate, averting what could have been a deadly attack, and Imphal West district police later apprehended a 35-year-old suspect at the scene.
The Manipur University Teachers’ Association (MUTA) led a joint sit-in protest at the campus Traffic Island from 11:00 AM to 2:00 PM, drawing strong backing from officer, staff, and student unions. Demonstrators carried placards demanding an end to terrorism targeting educators, amid growing unease over the safety of the academic community in the state.
“Let us stand united for peace, security, and academic freedom. Let knowledge explode, not bombs,” MUTA stated in a collective call to action that resonated across the campus.
Expressing deep anxiety over campus safety, Manipur University Students’ Union President L. Sanathoi warned of the broader fallout from such acts of intimidation. “A threat to a teacher is a threat to education,” he said, underlining concerns that violence against educators strikes at the very foundation of learning.
University bodies have urgently demanded that state authorities implement rigorous security measures to shield the academic fraternity from ongoing intimidation. Friday’s protest highlights escalating anxiety within Manipur University’s campus community and places renewed pressure on the government to ensure the safety of teachers, students, and staff at one of the state’s premier institutions of higher education.
