‘Our Drones Were Very Useful’: Tusk Woos India With Defence Exports
India and Poland on Thursday agreed to deepen cooperation in defence, space and nuclear energy, with Prime Minister Narendra Modi inviting Polish companies to join India in the co-development and co-production of technologies across the three strategic sectors. The announcement came after Modi held talks with his Polish counterpart Donald Tusk in New Delhi, as the two countries seek to expand their strategic partnership beyond traditional trade and diplomatic engagement.
The growing defence cooperation emerged as a key focus of the visit. Poland is looking to widen its economic and strategic engagement with India, while New Delhi aims to strengthen domestic manufacturing and diversify its defence and technology partnerships. Tusk said the two sides had held productive discussions on strengthening their strategic partnership and identifying priorities for future cooperation, pointing to the economic and industrial complementarities between the two countries. “Our drones were very useful,” he said, pitching Poland’s defence capabilities as an area for closer engagement with India.
Modi said the deepened partnership builds on the strategic ties established during his visit to Warsaw in August 2024. “During that visit, we elevated our relations to the level of a Strategic Partnership. Building on this strong foundation, our partnership has gained new momentum over the past two years,” he said, adding that the two countries’ shared democratic values and commitment to the rule of law provide a foundation for closer cooperation amid global uncertainty. “We invite companies from Poland to engage in co-development and co-production with India in all these strategic sectors,” Modi said.
Tusk, for his part, said the partnership should encompass both established industries and emerging areas such as space, while also helping the two countries strengthen their access to critical resources and strategic materials. He described the India-Poland relationship as one built on trust and shared interests, noting that the two nations have no conflicting interests or historical disputes standing in the way of closer ties.
The two leaders also addressed international conflicts and the need for more effective global institutions. “Be it Ukraine or West Asia, India will continue to support every meaningful effort towards peace,” Modi said, reiterating New Delhi’s position on international efforts to resolve conflicts. He also called for reforms to global governance institutions to make them more effective and better equipped to respond to contemporary challenges.
Tusk praised India’s growing international role, describing the country as a source of hope amid geopolitical instability. He also referred to the historical significance of Poland’s Solidarity movement, which relied on non-violent action, drawing a parallel with the shared values underpinning the relationship between the two democracies.
