Two foreign workers have been killed and an Indian citizen injured after a fire broke out near Saudi Arabia’s Shaybah oil field, triggered by the debris of a destroyed drone, in an incident that comes amid steadily rising security threats and tensions across the Persian Gulf region.
According to Saudi Arabia’s Energy Ministry, a drone targeting a project at the Shaybah oil field of state-owned oil giant Saudi Aramco in the Eastern Province was shot down in mid-air on Wednesday morning. However, the wreckage of the drone fell on a contractor’s vehicle stationed outside the project site, sparking a blaze. A Nepali national and a Filipino citizen were killed in the incident, while an Indian and a Pakistani national sustained injuries.
The ministry clarified that swift action by the authorities ensured there was no disruption to the normal operations of the oil field. It also extended condolences to the families of those who lost their lives.
The incident comes as the United States has ordered its embassy staff and their families to leave Saudi Arabia, along with several other countries in the region, citing growing security threats. According to a report by the Associated Press, the same drawdown order has been issued to American diplomats not only in Saudi Arabia but also in the United Arab Emirates, Jordan, Qatar and Bahrain.
Located close to the UAE border, the Shaybah oil field has become the latest flashpoint in a string of attacks on energy infrastructure in the Middle East, renewing concerns over the safety of the region’s vital energy facilities and the millions of foreign workers employed there. Notably, earlier this month, on October 7, a fire had also broken out at an administrative building operated by Aramco in the Eastern Province following an attack, further underscoring the mounting risks facing the kingdom’s energy sector.
