Manipur Police and central security forces have arrested three suspects in connection with the October 19 attack at Sunurok Hill that left three people dead and three others injured, and recovered 12 firearms, more than 1,000 rounds of ammunition and explosives during follow-up operations.
Addressing a press conference at the Manipur Police Headquarters on Tuesday, Additional Director General of Police (Law and Order) Lhari Dorjee Lhatoo said preliminary investigations indicated that two of the arrested persons had admitted to being part of the assault team. Further investigations are underway to identify and apprehend other individuals involved in the attack, he said.
Based on disclosures made by the accused, security personnel recovered an assortment of weapons, including an INSAS rifle, an M16 rifle, an A1 rifle, an AK-47-type rifle, a 7.62 mm sniper rifle, a Heckler & Koch 5.56 mm rifle, three 12-bore single-barrel guns, a lethod gun and a handmade rocket launcher. The total seizure included 12 firearms, 1,095 live rounds of ammunition of various calibres, explosives and other items, police said.
In a separate operation conducted on Tuesday morning around Sinai Camp, a designated Suspension of Operations (SoO) camp, security forces detained 17 individuals for verification after their identities did not match the listed KNO and KLA cadres associated with the camp. Authorities are also investigating reports of missing ammunition and magazines from the facility.
Lhatoo said senior officers of the Manipur Police and the combined security forces carried out helicopter surveillance and have intensified operations in the region.
Meanwhile, in connection with the Khangabok-Sangaiyumpham case, a joint team of Thoubal police and central security personnel searched around 146 houses and verified more than 300 individuals in the Sangaiyumpham-Cherapur area. Four suspects were detained during the drive, of whom two have been formally arrested. A double-barrel gun was also seized and sent for forensic examination, the ADGP added.
Amid the ongoing operations, Manipur Police urged residents to remain calm, refrain from taking the law into their own hands and avoid circulating unverified information or rumours on social media.
The public has also been asked to cooperate with the security forces and report any suspicious activity to the nearest police station or the Central Control Room.
