India’s medal rush at the fifth Asian Para Games in Aichi-Nagoya, Japan, continued on Tuesday as Pranav Soorma clinched gold and Ram Ratan Singh took silver in the men’s discus throw F51/F52/F53 combined event.
Soorma delivered a record-breaking performance, unleashing a throw of 11.66 metres on his fourth attempt to set a new Asian record and seal the top spot on the podium. Ram Ratan Singh, meanwhile, claimed silver with a best effort of 10.35 metres registered on his second attempt.
Iran’s Alireza Hemami, who recorded a throw of 20.20 metres, had to settle for the bronze medal. In this combined competition, which features athletes from different physical impairment classes, medals are not decided on throw distance alone. Instead, the Raza Points System is used to comparatively evaluate performances across classes.
Under this system, points are calculated based on an athlete’s throw distance and the standards of their respective competition class to determine the final standings. That is why Hemami, despite throwing the discus farther than either Indian, finished third.
Notably, Soorma had previously tasted success at the Asian Para Games as well. At the 2022 Hangzhou Asian Para Games, held in 2023, he won gold in the men’s club throw F51 event.
Having overcome various adversities in life to carve out a distinct identity in para-athletics, Pranav has once again achieved significant success on the international stage.
The achievements of Pranav Soorma and Ram Ratan Singh have boosted India’s medal tally while once again reflecting the country’s strong presence in para-athletics at the Asian Para Games.
