Guwahati Bar Incident: Club Disputes Viral Bouncer Assault Video
Seven people, including the manager and staff of a bar in Guwahati’s Khanapara area, have been arrested following allegations that a woman was assaulted inside the establishment. The incident at The Locals Bar Cum Restaurant occurred at around 2.30 am on October 2, police said, after a video depicting the alleged assault surfaced on social media.
Dispur police said a preliminary review of CCTV footage showed a group of men and women allegedly assaulting the woman before she was dragged toward the basement. According to police, she was then pulled by her hair and clothing and allegedly assaulted again in the basement, where she appeared to become semi-conscious. Several people allegedly involved were associated with the bar’s management or staff.
The club, however, disputed the circulating account through an unofficial statement. According to this version, the woman entered the bar with a female friend and was heavily intoxicated. She moved between tables before arguing with another person on the dance floor and later with staff and security personnel.
The club claimed that a female bouncer asked the woman to leave after she behaved aggressively. The woman allegedly threw wine at the bouncer and attempted to strike her with the glass. The glass broke, leaving the bouncer with an injury that required 16 stitches, according to the statement.
The bouncer then allegedly slapped the woman while trying to remove her from the premises. The club claimed that the woman continued resisting, struck staff and security personnel, and later lost her balance in the basement parking area while severely intoxicated. Staff allegedly attempted to take her for medical treatment, but she refused and began hitting them, prompting them to leave her in the area to avoid another confrontation.
The club also denied that the woman had been stripped or physically assaulted by any man. It said the viral footage had been shot from behind her and that the angle and her backless top may have created the impression that she was not wearing clothes on her upper body.
Police said the bar was operating beyond its permitted closing time of 12.30 am and that its management had failed to inform the local police station about the incident.
Following a preliminary inquiry, Dispur police registered a police-initiated case, or suo motu case, under Sections 61(2), 117(2), 74, 75, 109 and 3(5) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, 2023. The case has been recorded as Dispur Police Station Case No. 726/2026.
The arrested individuals are bar manager Justin D. Areng, 28; event manager Nikebur Zaman Sarkar, alias Nikebur Zaman Sardar and Roman, 30; front office executive Jhumpa Sinha, 23; Usha Devi, 22; Manju Das, 26; Gourav Mahanta, 21; and Dino Sona, 21.
Police said the investigation was continuing, with officials examining the CCTV footage, the sequence of events, the roles of those involved, the bar’s operating hours and other possible violations. The allegations remain subject to the outcome of the legal process.
