US Expels 2 Iranian Delegation Members for Overstaying
The United States expelled two members of Iran’s delegation to the United Nations after they remained in New York past a State Department-ordered departure deadline, the department said Saturday. The two officials attended the recently concluded UN General Assembly and left the country on consecutive days.
A US official told Agence France-Presse that the delegation members were found in New York well after the General Assembly had ended. “They have now been kicked out of the US,” the official said, adding that Secretary of State Marco Rubio “means business.”
US media reported that Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi and his delegation had been instructed on Monday to leave the United States. The State Department acted after Iran’s mission to the UN informed US authorities on Friday that the two members were still in the country. One departed on Friday night and the other on Saturday morning, according to Axios.
The expulsions followed meetings between US and Iranian officials in New York on the sidelines of the General Assembly. President Donald Trump had rejected an Iranian proposal to reopen the Strait of Hormuz but said he expected negotiations with Tehran to resume in the coming days. Iran’s state news agency IRNA, however, reported that no additional direct talks with Washington were scheduled.
