Ebola Outbreak in DR Congo: 4,000 Dead, 8,300 Cases Confirmed
The ongoing Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of the Congo has killed 4,018 people among 8,300 confirmed cases across seven provinces, according to health authorities. Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention warned that a recent fall in reported cases may reflect weaknesses in surveillance rather than a sustained reduction in transmission.
The Congolese Health Ministry said 2,162 patients have recovered, while the case fatality rate stands at 48.4 per cent. These figures do not necessarily show the outbreak’s full scale, as infections and deaths may be going undetected.
Africa CDC said the outbreak has expanded from three health zones in mid-May to 63 zones across seven provinces. Forty-five health zones continue to report active transmission, prompting the agency to caution against treating the decline in cases as evidence that the crisis is under control.
International medical charity Médecins Sans Frontières said the actual death toll could be higher because of gaps in disease surveillance and case detection. Insecurity and community resistance in several areas have also hindered public health operations, making it harder to identify cases and contain the virus.
