Saudi Coalition Intercepts Houthi Missiles and Drones
A Saudi-led coalition said on Thursday that its forces intercepted and destroyed two ballistic missiles and four drones launched by Yemen’s Iran-backed Houthi group at Saudi Arabia. The attacks were intercepted over the southern city of Jazan and Khamis Mushait, a southwestern city that hosts an airbase, according to the coalition.
Jazan is near energy and oil facilities that have been targeted in recent weeks. The coalition attributed the attacks to what it called “the Houthi terrorist militia.” Saudi Civil Defence said debris from an intercepted ballistic missile in Khamis Mushait province caused “limited material damage.” No casualties were reported.
The strikes were the latest in a series of Houthi attacks since July, when renewed hostilities ended a years-long truce and drew Yemen deeper into the wider Middle East conflict. Yemen remains one of the world’s poorest countries and is facing a severe humanitarian crisis.
Fighting intensified in September when the Houthis launched a rapid offensive and seized Yemen’s entire Red Sea coast, including the Bab al-Mandab Strait, a crucial shipping route. The group has also sought to block Saudi energy exports, which the report said were already disrupted by Iran’s closure of the Strait of Hormuz.
Yemen’s civil war began in 2014 after the Houthis seized the capital, Sanaa, from the Saudi-backed government and took control of large areas of northern Yemen. Riyadh intervened the following year, leading an international coalition in the conflict.
