The Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) drew scrutiny at its first regional volunteers’ meeting in Guwahati on Sunday after a backdrop map inaccurately depicted Assam’s boundaries and co-convenor Ashutosh Ranka used an unusual spelling of the state’s name in a social media post. The incidents came as the party sought to expand its political activities in Assam and the wider Northeast.
An India Today NE journalist pointed out the boundary error during an interaction with a CJP panel that included Nationalist Congress Party spokesperson Anish Gawande, members of the Assam Jatiya Parishad and other participants. The panel did not provide an explanation.
The meeting had already been disrupted after Assam Police detained several CJP leaders and volunteers ahead of the gathering. Ranka and other party functionaries were later released.
After his release, Ranka alleged that the detentions were illegal. In a post on X, he wrote: “The illegal detention by Assam Police has finally ended. We have asked Police to go and drop us from where we were picked up illegally in the first place.” He also said he would address the media at Chaudhary Tila, opposite the Assam Secretariat.
Ranka ended his post with the phrase “Jai Ai Akom,” drawing further attention to the party’s reference to Assam. The state is commonly known as “Asom” in romanized Assamese and as “Assam” in English; “Akom” is not the standard spelling in either form.
The inaccurate map and the unusual spelling drew criticism as CJP attempted to establish a stronger presence in Assam. CJP leaders alleged that the police detentions were intended to prevent the meeting from taking place, while the circumstances surrounding the action became part of a wider political dispute.
