A ward member of Ghoraghach village in Assam’s Moran district has been detained by police in connection with the alleged theft of a cow from Tilaijan Tea Estate. The accused, identified as Arun Guriya, was taken into custody after a formal complaint was filed at Moran Police Station, an official said.
The stolen cow belonged to Mukesh Goala, a resident of Line No. 6 at Tilaijan Tea Estate. According to the complaint, the animal was taken around noon on Saturday. Local residents spotted two individuals leading the cow away and subsequently questioned Guriya about his alleged role in the incident. He reportedly denied any involvement.
Following the complaint, the victim’s family approached Moran Police Station to register a case. Police then summoned Guriya for questioning as part of their investigation into the theft.
The stolen cow was later recovered by police in the evening, authorities confirmed.
A case, numbered 67, has been registered at Moran Police Station under Sections 303(2) and 3(5) of the Indian Penal Code. Police have detained Guriya and are actively investigating the alleged theft and the involvement of others linked to the case.
The alleged participation of an elected local representative in the incident has drawn sharp resentment from some residents in the area, who expressed concern over the conduct of a public official in such a case.
