Golaghat Fire: Bokakhat Market Engulfed, Rescue Underway
A large fire broke out this morning in the main market area of Bokakhat in Golaghat district, damaging several shops and spreading to nearby commercial buildings. The blaze began at about 9.30 am after an electrical short circuit in a godown where firecrackers and an estimated 60 to 70 LPG cylinders were stored, sources said. The stored materials quickly ignited, triggering firecracker bursts and explosions involving more than 20 LPG cylinders.
The explosions intensified the inferno, which spread to adjoining shops, a hotel and nearby houses. At least five shops were reportedly gutted in the blaze, eyewitnesses said, as flames raced through tightly packed commercial premises in the market area.
Firefighters from the Bokakhat brigade were deployed to control the fire. A local resident claimed the firefighting vehicles later left the scene to refill their water tanks and were delayed in returning, during which time the fire reportedly spread further.
Additional fire tenders were being brought in from Golaghat, Kaliabor and NRL to bolster firefighting efforts, according to residents and officials at the scene. An official of Bokakhat Police Station confirmed that a fire had broken out in the area.
Authorities have not provided details on casualties or the total extent of property damage in initial reports. The incident highlights the hazards posed by storing explosive materials and multiple LPG cylinders in densely populated market zones, complicating containment and rescue operations.
