Authorities in Sikkim’s Mangan district have stepped up flood monitoring and early warning measures along vulnerable Himalayan rivers and glacial lakes after renewed concerns following recent flash floods in Nepal. The district administration says the upgrades are aimed at improving real-time surveillance and rapid information flow to reduce risk to downstream communities.
District Collector Anant Jain said several high-risk glacial lakes are now fitted with systems that continuously track water levels and flow. Night-vision cameras have been installed for round-the-clock observation of vulnerable zones. “Whenever the water level of the lake increases or decreases, the information goes to the headquarters and is sent to the district administration,” Jain said.
An early warning system has been put in place along the Thangu–Lachung stretch. Officials have set up around four monitoring points between the Moguthang axis, where water flow concentrates, and two additional monitoring units on the Lachung side. The systems monitor the speed and height of flows and allow authorities to quickly transmit critical information to the headquarters, Jain said.
The district has also focused on lowering human exposure to flood-prone areas. Repeated advisories against development in vulnerable zones have, the administration says, led to a noticeable decline in construction and encroachment along riverbanks and low-lying areas.
A riverside protective wall project is in the final stages of sanction. Jain said the proposed river-training work, once approved and implemented, would strengthen local flood mitigation. “If the work is sanctioned and the whole river training work starts, then it will be very helpful to mitigate [flood risk],” he said.
Local measures take on greater significance as Himalayan states review early warning systems and preparedness in the wake of devastating flash floods in neighboring Nepal.
