Assam LoP Wazed Ali Choudhury: AIUDF ‘Not a Factor’ in Nagaon Bypoll
Assam Leader of the Opposition Wazed Ali Choudhury on August 29 in Guwahati downplayed the role of the All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF) in the forthcoming Nagaon Lok Sabha by-election, saying the contest would be fought mainly between the state’s principal political forces.
Choudhury said the Congress has received five applications for its party ticket and that preparations for the bypoll are already underway. He added that the party high command will take the final decision on the Congress candidate.
On the AIUDF, Choudhury alleged the party exists because of the BJP and described both parties as “communal parties.” He said, “The AIUDF is not a factor in this election. The AIUDF exists because of the BJP. Once the AIUDF is finished, the BJP will also be finished. Both are communal parties. If one shuts down, the other will too.”
The Nagaon Lok Sabha seat fell vacant after former MP Pradyut Bordoloi was elected to the Assam Assembly. The Election Commission has not yet announced the schedule for the by-election.
Choudhury also dismissed rumours that Congress MLA and former Leader of the Opposition Debabrata Saikia might leave the party, saying Saikia had made it clear he would remain with the Congress.
With five aspirants in the running, the Congress is preparing to finalise its nominee for the Nagaon bypoll, leaving the ultimate choice to the party’s central leadership.
