Revealed: Bangladesh Police Hid Ligature Evidence in Rangpur Murder

Bangladesh Police investigators probing the August 19 Rangpur quadruple murder did not send all the ligature material used to strangle the victims to the forensic pathologist, an omission that has raised questions about possible evidence suppression and procedural lapses, according to Assistant Professor of Forensic Medicine at Rangpur Medical College Hospital, Dr Biswas, who spoke to Northeast News. The missing items reportedly include thin cotton towels, cords and ropes allegedly used as ligatures at the scene.

Mortuary photographs reviewed by Northeast News show deep furrows and lacerations on the victims’ necks. Because Dr Biswas never received the original ligature material, he says he could not formally state whether the width, texture and fibre pattern of the real weapon matched the abrasions and furrows observed on the throats. That gap, forensic specialists warn, can frustrate efforts to establish whether different ligatures were used and whether they point to multiple perpetrators.

Forensic pathologists analyze more than cause of death; they assess the mechanics of assault, knot patterns and the physical fit between weapon and injury. The source article notes that withholding ligature evidence can be used to control a case narrative or to obscure facts that might contradict an official theory-motivations that can include foul play, corruption or protecting a suspect.

Dr Biswas documented strangulation injuries on all four victims. In Agami’s post-mortem report he wrote: “One ligature mark was found in the middle of the neck, which was horizontal and encircled the neck. O/D (on dissection) the underlying muscles showed congestion and the trachea and esophagus (sic) were found highly congested.” He concluded the neck injury was caused by a “blunt soft flexible weapon” and that the cause of death was “asphyxia resulting from strangulation, which was ante-mortem and homicidal in nature.” He recorded identical observations for Ganapati, Aayush and Pritilata.

The reports describe deep internal congestion and bruising consistent with compression applied while victims were alive. Veins collapse first under tight compression, trapping blood in neck tissues and producing the localized haemorrhage and pooling noted by the pathologist. Forensic analysis also distinguishes between vascular occlusion-when blood flow to the brain is cut off, producing unconsciousness within roughly 10–15 seconds-and pure airway compression, which can allow consciousness to persist for one to two minutes as remaining oxygen is consumed. Sustained pressure can produce brain damage within four to five minutes and lead to permanent biological death after additional minutes without circulation.

Investigators’ failure to submit the ligature items to the forensic examiner leaves critical evidentiary questions unanswered and creates what experts describe as an intentional or negligent “gap” in the medico-legal record of the Rangpur case.
