Meghalaya CM Lays Foundation for Rs 65-Crore Vet Hospital – Major Boost
Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma laid the foundation stone for a Rs 65-crore State Veterinary Hospital in Upper Shillong, announcing a major push to strengthen veterinary healthcare and animal health services across the state. The new facility is intended to provide advanced care for livestock and companion animals and to bolster the state’s veterinary infrastructure.
The modern hospital will include diagnostic and imaging facilities, surgery and orthopaedics, inpatient care, laboratories and an on-site pharmacy, according to the Chief Minister. These services aim to bring tertiary-level veterinary care closer to farmers and animal owners in Meghalaya.
Sangma said the project is part of a broader plan to build a stronger veterinary healthcare ecosystem using a hub-and-spoke model. Under this approach, the central hospital will act as a hub while district veterinary centres are upgraded as spokes through better infrastructure, equipment, medicines and additional manpower.
The Chief Minister said the initiative is expected to improve animal health, support farmers, encourage entrepreneurship in the livestock sector and help address existing demand–supply gaps in veterinary services. He stressed that enhanced services would benefit both rural livelihoods and the wider animal-health economy.
Sangma urged the Veterinary Department to take greater ownership in tackling challenges, noting that while the government can provide infrastructure and a roadmap, meaningful improvements will require coordinated efforts across the system. He expressed hope that the new hospital will develop into a leading veterinary healthcare and research centre serving Meghalaya and the wider Northeast.
