Meghalaya Bar Bodies Deny Link Between AG Removal, Harassment Case
Shillong, August 19, 2026 — The Shillong Bar Association and the High Court of Meghalaya Bar Association on Wednesday said their call for the removal of Meghalaya Advocate General Amit Kumar is not linked to any effort to shield a lawyer accused of sexually harassing his junior. The two bar bodies made the clarification at a joint press conference in Shillong.
Addressing reporters, Shillong Bar Association secretary TL and representatives of the High Court Bar emphasised that the demand to remove the Advocate General arose from matters separate from the harassment allegation. They rejected media and public suggestions that the move was intended to protect the accused lawyer or influence the handling of the complaint.
The associations said the two issues — the internal complaint of sexual harassment and their position on the Advocate General — should be considered independently. They underlined the importance of not conflating professional disciplinary concerns about the state’s law officer with the separate allegations against an individual advocate.
The bar bodies did not provide further details about the timeline for their removal demand or any internal proceedings related to the harassment complaint during the press briefing. Their statement appears aimed at preventing misunderstanding and preserving the integrity of both the complaint process and professional accountability mechanisms.
