Three Militants Linked to Proscribed Outfits Arrested in Manipur
Police said on Monday, August 17, that three militants linked to different proscribed outfits were arrested in Manipur’s Imphal West district over the weekend. The arrests, made on Sunday, came during separate operations in and around Imphal West and were announced by law enforcement officials on Monday.
K. Lanchenba Meitei, 19, was taken into custody from Thiyam Leishangkhong, and Greatson Lourembam, 25, was apprehended from Awang Leikinthabi Shantipur, police said. Both men have been identified by authorities as members of the banned People’s Liberation Army (PLA).
In a separate arrest on Sunday, N. Shanta Meitei — described by police as a self-styled private of the United National Liberation Front (Koireng) — was detained from Loushangkhong. The term “self-styled private” indicates the individual allegedly claimed a rank within the insurgent group, authorities added.
Separately, security forces recovered an AK-56 rifle and four live rounds from Khozoul in Jiribam district on Saturday, according to officials. The seizure and the arrests form part of ongoing counterinsurgency efforts in the region.
Further investigation into the suspects’ activities and any wider networks is underway, police said. Authorities did not immediately release additional details about charges, the circumstances of the arrests, or potential links between the detained individuals.
