Tripura Chief Minister Manik Saha on Sunday, August 16, 2026, sharply criticized the Congress for its stance on the national song “Vande Mataram”, underscoring the song’s historical significance and its role in India’s freedom struggle. Speaking to the media, Saha framed the debate as a matter of historical understanding and national sentiment.
Saha said many Congress leaders “appeared to lack a proper understanding of the historical importance of ‘Vande Mataram’,” and argued that acknowledging the song’s legacy is essential to recalling the sacrifices of the freedom movement.
He welcomed Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s emphasis on the 150th anniversary of “Vande Mataram”, calling the observance significant for renewing public awareness of the song’s contribution to India’s struggle for independence.
According to the Chief Minister, “Vande Mataram” inspired patriotism, courage and a spirit of sacrifice among the people during the freedom struggle. He added that numerous individuals had been motivated by the song to make personal sacrifices, and that it helped generate strength and enthusiasm across the masses.
Saha also criticised the Congress over the conduct of opposition parties in Parliament. He said everyone has the right to enter Parliament, but warned that “creating disruptions outside after failing to engage in meaningful discussions on important issues was not desirable.”
He cautioned that such behaviour could leave a negative impression on the public and reveal the underlying mindset of the political parties involved.
On state priorities, the Chief Minister highlighted Tripura’s youth and human resources as the state’s biggest asset. He said technology-based, free online examination facilities could greatly benefit young people preparing for competitive exams, welcomed initiatives to provide such opportunities, and urged that Tripura make proper use of its human resources to accelerate the state’s development.
