RSS Worker to Stage Hunger Strike Over Assam CM’s Paresh Baruah
An RSS worker in Guwahati, Hiteswar Chakravorty, will begin a 335-hour hunger strike at 11:00 am on Sunday, August 16, 2026, and continue until 10:00 am on August 30, 2026, staging the protest at Dispur opposite the Assam Secretariat. Chakravorty said the fast is aimed at protesting remarks by Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on July 10, in which Sarma, he alleged, described ULFA(I) leader Paresh Baruah as a “revolutionary” and called for a portrait or mural of him to be drawn.
Chakravorty accused the Chief Minister of glorifying the leader of a banned insurgent group and called Sarma’s comments “shameful and unfortunate.” He argued that praising Paresh Baruah was inappropriate given Baruah’s long association with the armed ULFA insurgency and the organisation’s history of violence in Assam. “Is calling Paresh Baruah a revolutionary justified?” Chakravorty asked, questioning the compatibility of such remarks with Sarma’s repeated references to Hindutva and support for the RSS.
The protest is deliberately timed to fall between two anniversaries of killings of RSS members that Chakravorty cited. He recalled the alleged gunning down of RSS leader Pramod Narayan Dixit at Barpeta Road on August 16, 1991, and the killing of RSS worker Sukleswar Medhi in Nalbari on August 30, 2005. “I will stage the hunger strike from the day when Pramod ji was killed till the day when Sukleswar Medhi was killed on August 30,” he said, adding that several other senior RSS leaders and workers were allegedly killed by ULFA militants during the insurgency.
Chakravorty has demanded an apology from Chief Minister Sarma and said Sarma should resign if he refuses to apologise. He has also called for the arrest of Paresh Baruah under the National Security Act. Drawing a contrast with the arrest of a young woman for allegedly writing poems in support of ULFA, Chakravorty questioned why the Chief Minister should not face action for publicly appealing for an image of the leader of a proscribed armed group to be created. He said the hunger strike seeks to highlight what he described as a contradiction between Sarma’s public support for the RSS and his remarks about the ULFA(I) chief.
