Gaurav Gogoi Slams ‘Purification’ of Haldwani Venue After Kharge Meet
Congress MP Gaurav Gogoi on Saturday, August 15, condemned the alleged “purification” of premises in Haldwani, Uttarakhand, where a meeting of the Indian National Congress took place in the presence of party president Mallikarjun Kharge. In a post on X, Gogoi described the act as “unlawful and deeply objectionable,” saying it indicated caste-based discrimination and reflected the ideology of the BJP-RSS.
Gogoi called the reported action unconstitutional and “an affront to the dignity of Dalits and the legacy of B R Ambedkar,” stressing that such practices have no place in a democratic republic. He characterized the incident as evidence that untouchability and caste discrimination remain a lived reality for Dalits even after eight decades of Independence.
The Congress leader said he led a march with the Guwahati Metropolitan District Congress on Friday to protest the incident and to show solidarity with Kharge. Gogoi used his X post to underline the party’s stance and to mobilize local opposition to the reported act.
“Congress will remain steadfast in defending the Constitution, equality, justice and the dignity of every individual,” Gogoi wrote, framing the response as both political and constitutional. His remarks link the episode to broader concerns about social exclusion and the safeguarding of constitutional rights.
The allegation, as described by Gogoi, brings renewed attention to caste-based exclusion at public and political events and is likely to intensify scrutiny of local authorities and political rivals in Uttarakhand. The Congress response positions the party to press for accountability while highlighting ongoing debates over social equality and the enforcement of constitutional protections.
