A tailor was detained in Assam’s Morigaon district after a Facebook account bearing his name allegedly posted a death threat against Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma during the chief minister’s Facebook Live session, police said. The post prompted immediate action by local law enforcement while the live interaction was underway.
The detained man was identified as Abdul Mutaleb. Bhuragaon Police took him into custody after the alleged threat appeared on a Facebook profile that used his name and photograph, according to the police statement.
Mutaleb has denied making the threat and told police a fake account was created to implicate him. “This is completely fake. I request the police to probe the matter. I am now heading to the police station. Someone has used my photo and created a fake Facebook account to make me the accused. I am just a tailor,” he said.
Police said they are questioning Mutaleb to determine whether he operated the account that posted the threat and to establish the circumstances surrounding the post. Officers are seeking to verify his account of events and any possible links to the profile in question.
Investigators also plan to examine the digital trail associated with the Facebook account, including its authenticity and activity history, to establish whether the profile was genuine or the result of identity misuse. Digital forensics and account metadata will be central to that probe, police added.
The incident, which occurred during the chief minister’s online interaction with the public, has drawn attention to the risks of social media misuse and the creation of fake accounts to issue threats or frame individuals. Authorities said further details are expected to emerge as the investigation by Bhuragaon Police continues.
