Agartala, 12 August 2026 — Traffic congestion in the city flared into fresh concern on Wednesday evening after three to four ambulances were reportedly held up in a traffic jam at IGM Choumuhani, raising alarms about delays for emergency services. The incident underlines growing frustration among residents and commuters over worsening gridlock in the state capital.
Commuters say traffic conditions have deteriorated over the past several months. Routes that normally take about 30 minutes are now reportedly taking one-and-a-half to two hours during peak periods, causing prolonged delays and mounting inconvenience for those traveling across the city.
Several key stretches have been repeatedly affected, including Shankar Choumuhani–Ker Choumuhani, Nagerjala–Melar Math, Post Office Choumuhani–Kaman Choumuhani and the Motor Stand area. These corridors have frequently witnessed heavy congestion, according to local accounts.
Questions have been raised about the effectiveness of traffic management. Although traffic personnel are deployed at multiple intersections, commuters allege that enforcement efforts focus more on collecting fines than on managing traffic flow or helping to ease jams when they occur.
The reported blockage of ambulances at IGM Choumuhani has intensified concern about the city’s ability to ensure clear passage for emergency vehicles.
