Manipur Alarm: Tokpa Naga Bodies Demand Urgent Action After Arson
Imphal: The Tokpa Naga Village Authority (TNVA) and the Liangmai Naga Council (LNC) have demanded immediate action after an armed assault on Tokpa Naga village in Kangpokpi district, Manipur, on August 11, 2026. According to both organisations, the attack occurred at about 9:30 pm in the village under Champai block, when men in camouflage uniforms allegedly entered the settlement, opened indiscriminate fire and set residential houses and a local church ablaze.
The arson destroyed nine houses and the church, forcing several families to flee their homes. No injuries were reported in the incident, the village authorities said, but many residents were left displaced and in need of urgent assistance.
The TNVA has called for the immediate registration of a first information report (FIR), a time-bound investigation and the prompt arrest of those responsible. The group also urged the state government to provide adequate compensation, immediate relief and rehabilitation to the families uprooted by the attack.
The LNC demanded an independent inquiry into the conduct and response of security personnel deployed near the area. Village authorities alleged that security forces stationed at Kalapahar High School-including personnel from the CRPF and Kangpokpi Police-failed to respond promptly despite repeated emergency appeals and calls for assistance.
The LNC questioned why troops reportedly located only a short distance from the violence did not intervene to prevent the destruction. Both organisations strongly condemned the attack and expressed deep concern over the alleged failure of nearby security personnel to act effectively once the violence began.
The TNVA and LNC have urged the state government to strengthen security arrangements around vulnerable settlements in the area and to ensure a swift, transparent probe so that those responsible are brought to justice and displaced families receive relief and rehabilitation without delay.
