Power has been restored to most flood-affected areas of Assam, but 12,756 consumers remain without electricity as crews continue restoration work in the hardest-hit parts of Upper Assam. The outage reduction comes as floodwaters recede and technicians assess safety before bringing additional infrastructure back online.
Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said on social media that the number of consumers without power has fallen by a further 30 percent as waters subside. He added that the government is regularly evaluating ground conditions and will reconnect transformers “wherever it is safe to do so.”
The Assam Power Distribution Company Ltd. (APDCL) said the remaining outages are concentrated in the Sivasagar electrical circle, including Gaurisagar, Sivasagar town, Nazira, Amguri and Demow. Restoration teams are prioritising these areas while following safety checks to prevent electrocution or equipment damage.
On July 24, the Chief Minister had reported that roughly 40,000 households were without electricity, with nearly 75 percent of affected connections already restored by that date. The latest figures indicate steady progress in power recovery across the state’s flood zones.
The floods were triggered by heavy rainfall in Nagaland and Upper Assam beginning on July 19, causing widespread damage across several districts. Authorities report the disaster has so far claimed 78 lives and left more than 3 lakh people affected, straining relief and recovery operations.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast heavy to very heavy rainfall and isolated thunderstorms in parts of Assam, Arunachal Pradesh and Nagaland over the next three days, raising the possibility of renewed flooding in vulnerable areas and underscoring the need for continued caution during restoration and relief work.
